We asked leaders at Youth Advocate Programs this question: "What are the skills and opportunities your youth need to be able to thrive?" And they responded:
"A lot of them need to learn to be leaders, they do not have very good examples of what responsibility looks like, especially males...They need to be strong in their environment, but don’t always know how. They did so well working as a team that day."
After sailing, many students told their peers about it and now even more want to learn! We can't wait to work with them again!
Full Interview with Youth Advocate Programs:
Carpe Ventus: What about the sailing event did you find beneficial for your program?
YAP: That you took the time to teach them the fundamentals, it gave them a new appreciation for [sailing]. I had not seen something in that short of an amount of time be that effective. They really engaged and it can be challenging to get them engaged. I think it was a great experience and for them to open up to you is significant.
Carpe Ventus: How did your youths talk about the event afterward?
YAP: They were bragging about it and telling their friends.
Carpe Ventus: Did you have any who were particularly impacted?
YAP: Sailing with Carpe Ventus helped one of our students grow in confidence, he really opened up more than he has, we usually have to separate him out because he does not want to be with his peers.
Carpe Ventus: What was it like for you to sail with the youth?
YAP: I didn’t know what to expect, I wanted them to enjoy it. I was reluctant. Once you gave everyone the opportunity to get involved I saw that it worked...Everyone participated, no one said, “I won’t steer or help sail the boat”.
Carpe Ventus: We want to have a better understanding of the support your youths need. What are the skills and opportunities your youth need to be able to thrive?
YAP: A lot of them need to learn to be leaders, they do not have very good examples of what responsibility looks like, especially males. They have a lot of confidence issues so they tend to emulate someone they feel is role-model-like, these are the most common issues with the men. I would be most interested in getting our young men involved. They are often using language that comes from hurt and anger. They need to be strong in their environment, but don’t always know how. They did so well working as a team that day.
